Since my previous posts, you may notice a thing or two that's different about me. First off, my hair is white, and second, so are my teeth! Let's talk about my hair first. So this will be my third time bleaching my hair, and it has been my favorite so far. I got it done at the beginning of April, right before I threw a '70s themed birthday party. I love bleaching my hair because sometimes I feel like I embody a completely different persona. When your hair feels blah, you feel blah. I wanted to do something different (although I've done it every year for the past three years) and switch up my look. Now on to my second point, and also the reason for this post, my teeth! You know when you think your teeth are white, but then are wearing a white shirt and your teeth all of a sudden look yellow? Well when you have white hair, it doesn't matter what color shirt you're wearing. Also who doesn't love a good smile? With that being said, this amazing company, Smile Brilliant, reached out to me and wanted to collaborate, and I was ecstatic. It was pretty serendipitous because right before they reached out, I was just thinking that I needed to start whitening my teeth again. So it was a match made in heaven.
I started whitening my teeth back in high school, and it's the one thing that is always a pain to keep up with. It's kind of like lotion. I always forget to put on lotion after I shower, and similarly, I always forget or don't want to whiten at night. But I can recall this one time where my teeth were the whitest they have ever been and I miss them everyday. You know you're doing something right when your dentist compliments you on how white your teeth look. But the one thing that has always kept me from not whitening as much as I used to is how sensitive my teeth would get. My dentist has told me I have really strong enamel, so when it comes to pain tolerance, it's pretty high. So to be sensitive from whitening was saying something. For the past 8 years or so, I have used Crest Whitestrips. They are so convenient because you can find them almost anywhere, and you just slap them on and take them off in 40 minutes or so. But I usually found that my teeth the next day would be a little tender, and sometimes the sensitivity outweighs the whiteness of your teeth.
Besides the sensitivity aspect, whitening is just hard to keep up with. My routine was pretty sporadic. I would whiten every so often, and definitely not everyday. I'm the kind of guy that loves his morning cup of coffee, and my teeth are definitely not happy with that. I also don't like to drink my hot coffee with a straw. It just seems... I don't know.. weird? I also feel like I'm constantly on the go, morning and night. I'm either out the door to work or heading to an event and am getting home late. So when it came to whitening I became really low maintenance because I couldn't find the time. Instead of the strips, I just started brushing with a whitening toothpaste and I felt like I was able to keep my teeth's level of white pretty stagnant. Not too yellow, and not too white, but I still wanted more. And that is where Smile Brilliant comes in!
When Ashley at Smile Brilliant reached out to me, I was pumped. She brought me up to speed on what sets Smile Brilliant apart, and things that stood out to me the most were custom fitted trays, the desensitizing gel, and the promised results. We got to talking and she offered to send me their T3 Sensitive kit for me to try out. I could not wait.
Once you get your kit shipped in the mail, you make your molds at home and they give you step-by-step directions on how to do that. You ship them back to the company and within a few days your molds are being made into trays and before you know it, your trays have arrived at your doorstep. I was so excited to start and get my teeth to where they once were! Once you get the trays, you start whitening for around 45 minutes and then each day you can add more time until you've hit 3 hours. While I don't have the patience myself to have these sit for three hours, it's good to know that if I ever need a super-whiten, I can do something like that. Then you brush your teeth with a non-whitening toothpaste, use your desensitizing gel in the same tray and apply that for 20 minutes. Although this really helped, I will be honest and say that my teeth still felt a little tender the next day, but definitely not as much as they would with the strips. One thing I liked about the trays, is how you can get your teeth in the very back of your mouth that whitening strips just can't reach. Those teeth were always a lot more yellow than the rest.
One other drawback from using the trays I experienced, which is not a huge problem whatsoever, is that they don't want you to drink water for at least an hour after. Since I do this right before bed, I usually feel like I have to drink all the water I want before I whiten because I usually go to sleep once they're out. And as with any whitening product, the less you intake foods or liquids that can stain your teeth, the better But I mean, how can you get rid of coffee AND wine? Seeing as how I NEED coffee every morning to start my day, I just got into the habit of brushing my teeth after my cup to try and prevent my teeth from re-staining.
Other than that, I am so beyond happy with the results I saw from this product. As you can tell from my before photo below, my teeth were decently white to begin with, so I felt like this product really just made them glow more. I still have a little yellowness near the root of my teeth, but the best part is that now I have custom fitted trays and I can just keep purchasing syringes for any upkeep. I will probably never go back to white strips ever again! I loved how easy and convenient they were to use and I didn't have to worry about them slipping and sliding around. They stayed put and I knew they were working. They are also great for anyone who experiences any sensitivity.
